LET THERE BE MAGIC (TEN FILMS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2022)
A new year and a new set of movies to get excited about.
But what are the ten films Pomona has high hopes for in 2022?
LICORICE PIZZA (January 2022)
Paul Thomas Anderson has been regarded one of the finest filmmakers of his generation and unsurprisingly his latest will be a contender during awards season.
A lot of interest has focused on whether Bradley Cooper may pick up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his brief, yet impactful performance as the Hollywood producer Jon Peters in the coming of age comedy.
Alana Haim of the LA sibling pop rock group Haim has also been drawing very favourable reviews for her performance as a photographer's assistant who Cooper Hoffman's young actor falls for.
Rounding out the cast are Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Benny Safdie and John C Reilly in a movie that has fared well during the end of year critics' awards.
BOILING POINT (January 2022)
Liverpudlian actor Stephen Graham has been one of the most consistently strong character actors to grace our cinema and TV screens in recent years.
Philip Barantini's breathtaking single take movie follows Graham's head chef Andy around a kitchen as the pressure mounts on him and his staff.
Juggling a messy personal life as well, Graham's character seems on course for a major breakdown.
With strong advance buzz on the film festival circuit, Barantini's frenetic movie is expected to confirm him as an exciting emerging talent.
BELFAST (January 2022)
After its People's Choice Award win at the Toronto Film Festival, Kenneth Branagh's most personal film to date has been the movie to beat during awards season.
Shot in gorgeous black and white by Haris Zambarloukos, Branagh's coming of age tale is drawn from his own experiences as a child growing up in North Belfast as sectarian violence erupted, giving rise to the Troubles.
As Buddy, Jude Hill has commanded a lot of attention as have Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe as his parents, Ciaran Hinds and Dame Judi Dench as his grandparents.
With a lot of excitement building that Branagh might finally capture an Oscar, expect this to do well as it garners more awards season attention - provided COVID doesn't disrupt its release.
THE DUKE (February 2022)
Roger Michel's sudden passing in September 2020 was a real shock to many.
It also occurred amid rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival of what would turn out to be the 'Notting Hill' and 'Changing Lanes' director's last film.
Based on a real story in 1961, Jim Broadbent plays a pensioner who was alleged to have stolen Francisco Goya's 'Portrait of the Duke of Wellington' from London's National Gallery.
Dame Helen Mirren, Fionn Whitehead, Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Goode also star in the comedy penned by Clive Coleman and Richard Bean.
THE BATMAN (March 2022)
After the over the top pasting handed out to Ben Affleck by some critics for his portrayal of The Dark Knight in Zack Snyder's Batman movies, Robert Pattinson becomes Bruce Wayne and dons the Batsuit.
Expectations are running high for director Matt Reeves' film because he did such a terrific job rebooting the 'Planet of the Apes' franchise.
Colin Farrell takes on the villainous role of the Penguin, while Paul Dano is the Riddler.
With Zoe Kravitz as Selena Kyle/Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Lieutenant James Gordon, John Turturro as a Mobster Carmine Falcone and Barry Keoghan as a young police officer, 'The Batman' has one of the hottest casts around.
THE NORTHMAN (April 2022)
After the stunning one-two of 'The Witch' and 'The Lighthouse,' Robert Eggers has a chance to cement his reputation as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in US cinema with this Viking revenge tale.
Filmed on both sides of the Irish border in Counties Antrim and Donegal, Alexander Skarsgard stars as the Viking Prince Amleth whose father is murdered by his uncle.
With a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bjork and Willem Dafoe, expect plenty of heightened moments of drama.
Given the technical brilliance of his previous work, anticipate loads of atmospheric shots by cinematographer Jarin Blaschke.
ELVIS (June 2022)
Tom Hanks teams up with flamboyant Australian director Baz Luhrmann in this biopic of the popular American singer.
With Hanks taking on the role of Elvis' manager Colonel Tom Parker, a lot will ride on Austin Butler's handling of a potentially starmaking role as the popular music icon.
Olivia DeJonge has also been cast as Priscilla Presley, while Richard Roxburgh and Kodi Smit-McPhee also appear.
However it is the decision by Luhrmann's decision to cast two relative unknowns as Elvis and Priscilla which makes this one of the most exciting gambles of 2022 which could either go spectacularly well or disastrously wrong.
BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (November 2022)
The death of Chadwick Boseman in August 2020 from colon cancer robbed Marvel fans of the chance to see him again as T'Challa after the huge success of the Oscar nominated original 'Black Panther' film.
Ryan Coogler is back in the director's chair for a film that will honour his memory and bring back many of the characters from Letitia Wright's Shuri to Lupita Nyong'o's Nakia abd Daniel Kaluuya's W'kabi.
The pressure is on after delivering Marvel's best movie in 2018 but Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett and Winston Duke are also set to appear, along with with Michaela Cole and Isaach De Bankole.
Production was halted after Wright sustained a shoulder injury during filming and is set to resume this month but with Marvel remaining tight lipped about the plot, it'll be fascinating to see how she takes on a more prominent role.
AVATAR 2 (December 2022)
Thirteen years have amazingly passed since James Cameron's sci-fi adventure with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver became the most successful movie of all time.
Cameron's movie was eventually knocked off its perch by Anthony and Joe Russo's 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019 but it'll be fascinating to see if audiences are still in thrall to the adventures of the Na'vi on Pandora - especially as three more sequels are planned for 2024, 2026 and 2028.
Worthington's Jake and Saldana's Neytiri have reportedly started a family in this new chapter.
Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis and CCH Pounder have also joined the cast of Na'vi warriors, while Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Jermaine Clement and Michelle Yeoh are in the human roles. Weaver is also set to return but not as Dr Grace Augustine, while Stephen Lang, who was the villain in the original, also has a mysterious role.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (December 2022)
Martin Scorsese's Apple TV+ movie brings together his two greatest muses - Robert de Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in an adaptation of New Yorker journalist David Granny's non fiction book.
Depicting a true story about a FBI probe in the 1920s into the slaughter of members of the Midwestern Native American Osage tribe, Scorsese's latest will, as usual, attract a lot of awards buzz is it is any way halfway decent.
De Niro plays William Hale, an Oklahoma cattle farmer suspected of the murders that occurred in Osage County.
DiCaprio plays a man who has married into the tribe and heads an accomplished cast that also includes Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, Lily Gladstone, John Lithgow and country music star Sturgill Simpson.
